Objectives of the Debate Society

9To generate effective critical and philosophical thinking on the primary issues in an assigned topic.
9To encourage students to shed their inhibitions and to build their confidence in public speaking.

9To work as a society to create a culture of rational debate based on research, mutual respect and use of one’s wits in VMSCL.

9To inculcate and encourage opposite views and be tolerant to opposite views
9To train students in the fine art of debating, and to empower them to use any debating format with ease.
9To encourage students to participate in State and National level debate competitions.

In pursuance of the above objectives, the Debate Society opened up membership for students of all classes for the academic year 2020-21. Accordingly, a google form was circulated on 9th November, 2020.

Orientation for members of the debate society


The Orientation for the Debate Society was held on 11 th November 2020 at 12:00 noon. The orientation was conducted by faculty coordination Assistant Professor Ms. Fouzia Rizvi. The Orientation inter alia covered various aspects such as the meaning and nature of the debate, types of debates, benefits of debates, and skills essential for the debating. The role of the speakers in a debate competition was also emphasized during the Orientation. The rules for debates were also declared with emphasis on relevance, promptness, fluency, and brevity of the debate. The Orientation concluded with the announcement of the first debate.

First Debate


The first debate was held on 19th November 2020, at 11:00 a.m.. The topic for debate was “Should we have EDM/Music festivals in Goa amidst pandemic situation.” The topic was a social issue to familiarize the students with the debating rules. Students for the motion- -Zoya Paes, Nash Ferrao, Jinu Ponnachan. Students against the motionSherwyn Correia, Jonathan Correia, Aashna Pathank.

Second Debate


The second debate was held on 11 th December 2020, at 11:00 a.m. on the topic “Should marriage age for girls be raised? The topic chosen was based on the legal issue to judge the student’s ability to research legal issues.
Affirmative speakers: Cassia Desouza, Bibi Rabiya Basri, Gautami Kamat, Ryle Ammagol. Negative Speakers: Amresh Bind, Simran Khadilkar, Bronessa Das, Abigail D’Souza. National level Debate Competition The KLE College of Law Navi Mumbai conducted an Online National Debate Competition on 25th January 2021. The Theme for the debate was Media Trial vs. Rights of the accused.

The faculty coordinators encouraged the members to participate in the Competition. From a group of eight students who showed interest, a selection round was held to select the members for the said competition.

Dr. B. S. Patil conducted an Orientation session for the participants of the KLE Competition held on 15th January 2021. The Orientation inter alia emphasized the skills involved in the debate, researching for the topic, raising the opening statement, and the manner of placing the argument.
