The world is facing environmental problems some of which have escalated to a point of no return. Going green is the need of the hour. Human beings have to adopt practices that are environmental friendly. The same applies to educational institutions too. In this regard, V. M. Salgaocar College of Law began the green initiative. Under this initiative, teachers and students were encouraged to go green and adopt environment-friendly practices.

Awareness Program on Managing E-Waste

On 8th January 2021, the green initiative committee hosted a bulk consumer awareness programme for the teaching and non-teaching staff of V. M. Salgaocar College of Law. The programme was titled “Managing E-Waste, On and Off-Campus- A guiding Session.” The resource person for the programme was Assistant Professor Sushant Figueiredo. He began the session by explaining what e-waste is and how we, as consumers, are affecting the environment and the health of the people around us by not segregating e-waste. He also pointed out the various mistakes committed in common parlance which are overlooked but are albeit very detrimental to humans and the environment. Assistant Professor Sushant also showed a documentary that highlighted the plight of the waste scavengers and garbage gatherers who are facing severe health issues because of the disposal of e-waste in household garbage. The session concluded on a positive note with a concrete affirmation from each and everyone present that they would segregate e-waste and dispose of it as directed.

Grow Our Vegetables – Horticulture in the Campus

V. M. Salgaocar College of Law decided to initiate horticulture in college after a lot of deliberations and meticulous planning. Mr. Lavu Govekar handled the initiative with gusto and enthusiasm. The plan was executed on 4th January 2021 after the College reopened. The land behind the college was leveled out. Stones, tile pieces and glass were cleared. Weeds and shrubs were cut and removed. The land was divided into plots and various seeds and shrubs were planted. The very first tree plantation programme was conducted soon after the Republic Day celebrations on 26th January 2021. The Principal Dr. Shaber Ali and Shri D. P. Pednekar along with other teaching and Non-teaching staff planted different varieties of trees around the campus which included Banana, Coconut, Sugarcane, Mango and Soursop tree. In the forthcoming week different types of fruit bearing trees, vegetables and medicinal plants like Lady Fingers, Brinjal, chilies, cucumber, ghosali, ghungara, kidney beans, kokan dudhi, naab, Palak, pumkin, radish, sarso bhaji, tamdi bhaji, Aloe Vera, Insulin, Ashwagandha, tulsi, turmeric, shatavari, lime, guava, custard apple etc. were planted. After a lot of care and nurturing them, the vegetables grew as planned. The first harvesting took place on 4th March 2021 wherein the vegetables were garnered and sold to the teaching and non-teaching staff at a nominal price. The faculty and non-teaching staff then regularly purchased vegetables. On 5th June 2021, World Environment Day was celebrated at V. M. Salgaocar College of Law. On the occasion, 5 fruit-bearing plants including Sitaphal, Mango, Chikoo and Lime were planted around the campus. The World Yoga Day on 21st June 2021 was celebrated in the College with fervor. Teaching and non-teaching staff performed yogasana to mark the celebration. This day was also commemorated by planting different trees around the campus. Vanamahotsava is a tree planting festival that is celebrated throughout India in order to create awareness about forest conservation and the significance of tree plantation. V. M. Salgaocar College of Law also celebrated the event on 7th July 2021 by planting trees around the campus which included Mango, Lime and Chikoo. Apart from these fruit bearing trees, many medicinal plants were also sowed which included Manpatri, panfuti, tulsi, turmeric, aloe vera etc. The second phase of Horticulture has been initiated in the college. Vegetables like lady fingers, pumpkin, cucumber, kokan dudhi, ghosali etc have been planted.
