INTERNATIONAL LAW SOCIETY 2019-2020

About The International Law Society

The International Law Society (ILS) was formed officially on the 7th of August, 2013, as a result of a student initiative to promote International Law among the students of the V. M. Salgaocar College of Law. We formed the society with the idea of promoting international law among the students in the styles of problem and visual-based learning, seminars by members, publishing articles on our International Law Society blog, and also lecture series. The Society intends to conduct weekly meetings of its member for activities, discussion and other items. The International Law Society, being a student initiative, was founded by a group of enthusiastic students who evinced immense interest in International Law, namely D. Gracious Timothy, Ashish Kuncoleikar and Ryan Mendes. ILS is proud to announce the membership of 33 students from different divisions, all who are keen in furthering their knowledge and developing a scholastic approach towards international law.

The Objective:

  1. To complement the interest of all the students who are interested in International Law, thus foster and culture that interest-cum-aspiration.
  2. To promote International Law among the students of V. M. Salgaocar College of Law through its open invited activities.
  3. Further the environment of discussions and deliberations on heated topics amongst the Law Students, therefore increasing student participation in Law Events.
  4. Having the Moot Court Society of the College collaborate with the ILS in matters of learning & researching the International Law.
  5. Participation in the Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition with a substantial discount and accessible material.
  6. To organize a symposium with the opportunity to host a Law event or programme on dedicated topics of International Law.

ILS Lecture Series:

The ILS organizes Lecture Series on assorted topics of International Law at regular intervals. The lectures are given by respected Resource Persons invited by the ILS. The lectures are conducted in the Conference Hall and have an open invitation for all those who are interested.

Minutes of International Law Society meeting #1

Time: 02:00 to 03:00p.m
Date: 29th July 2019
Attendance: 16 students present

Matters discussed:

  1. Professor Aamod and Professor Fouzia, welcomed all the students who enrolled for the membership of International Law Society. All the member students were required to introduce themselves and mark their attendance on the sheet circulated.
  2. Professor Aamod asked the final year students i.e., Raj Ramani, Vasantha Kotagiri and Rajlaxmi Bhatkar to speak about their interest towards joining the club. He later asked all the continuing members to express their views about the club.
  3. Furthermore, all were briefed on the different activities that members had to implement for the academic year 2019-2020. They were also told that the members would be given an opportunity to participate in the Models United Nation event.
  4. All the members were asked to attend the talks that are generally conducted in the International Center Goa. They were also asked to attend the guest lectures that would be held in our college and to make notes on the same.
  5. Professor Fouzia announced that Vasantha, a final year B.A.LL.B. student would be the Student in-charge of the club, for the academic year 2019-20. She further stated that if any enrolled member absented themselves from attending 2 consecutive meetings then their membership would be terminated.
  6. Later, members were asked to login to the Audiovisual Library of International Law and were advised to listen to the lectures that have been delivered by eminent scholars on International Studies. Towards the end of the meeting, all the students were asked to read on international terrorism and to find out about the convention on international terrorism.

Minutes of International Law Society meeting #2

Date: 6th August 2019
Attendance: 20 students present

Matters discussed:

  1. Asst. Prof. Aamod and Asst. Prof. Fouzia screened a documentary named ‘Despatches-Terror in Mumbai’ based on the 26/11 terrorist attacks that had taken place in different places in Mumbai which included the Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus railway station, Cafe Leopold, Cama Hospital, Nariman House, Oberoi Trident Hotel, The Taj Mahal Palace and Taj Mahal Tower hotel. The video was reported by Channel 4 which had clearly displayed that the objective of all the 10 Pakistani terrorists was to randomly kill as many people as possible. Out of the 10 terrorists, 9 of them were killed in the process of the attacks and only 1 member survived, by name Ajmal Kasab.
  2. The documentary was for around 45 minutes. The playing of the documentary was followed by a discussion on the horrifying attack that took place. All the members had discussed the various reasons for the success of the attack by the Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba who almost killed around 164 people in Mumbai. The faculty advisors, addressed the students on Terrorism, International Conventions on Terrorism, Response to Terrorism, India’s response to 26/11, and the cross border terrorism including State sponsored terrorism.
  3. Towards the end of the meeting, all the students were asked to read on international terrorism and to find out about the convention on international terrorism.
  4. New members from First year BA. LL.B were designated with the task of designing a poster for the ILS notice board on the Kulbushan Jadhav decision pronounced by the International Court of Justice.

Minutes of International Law Society meeting #3

Time: 02:00 to 04:00p.m
Date: 13th August 2019
Attendance: 20 students present

Matters discussed:

  1. Asst. Prof. Aamod screened the society members a video on OPERATION THUNDERBOLT. This rescue operation took place on June 27, 1976, when an Air France plane took off from Ben-Gurion International Airport in Lod, Israel, heading for Paris with a stopover in Athens, carrying 228 passengers of Israeli, French and various other nationalities. Security at the Lod airport was famously tight, but in Athens, where security was lax, four hijackers boarded the Airbus carrying large black bags that held guns and hand grenades took over the plane and forced the pilot to divert to Entebbe Airport, on the shore of Lake Victoria in Uganda. However, due to a dramatic military rescue operation carried on by the Israeli Special Forces, all the hostages were freed.
  2. After the video members had a short discussion on the operation, where the members expressed their views on the legality of the operation conducted by the Israeli forces. Some members were of the view that the operation violated the territorial sovereignty of Uganda while others felt it was a justified operation by the Israeli forces as it was an act to protect their citizens under threat.
  3. Later on, the members were asked to discuss the following topics- A. INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM, B. CAUSES OF TERRORISM AND C. STATE SPONSORED TERRORISM. All the members were divided into 6 groups to discuss these topics. Asst. Prof. Aamod took the lead of discussing these topics and later on all the members also added their inputs in the discussions.

ROLE PLAY ON EXTRADITION PROCEDURE

Attendance: 20 students present

The International Law Society held a Role play on the procedure of Extradition. The members of the Society depicted the signing of the extradition treaty, its contents, procedure that follows before an extradition magistrate, followed by Extradition request through diplomatic channel, judicial proceedings in the requested State and the repatriation of the fugitive offender.
The Objective of the Role play was to learn by enacting. As a prelude to this, the faculty advisors held sessions to sensitise the members on the concept of extradition. The role play was enacted before the Second Year LL.B Degree International Law. Faculty advisors of International Law Society, Asst. Prof. Fouzia Rizvi and Asst. Prof. Aamod Shirali, drafted the script for the role play and guided the students on Extradition Law prior to the role play.

REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE ORGANISED BY NCHRO

Students of The International Law Society attended a Human Rights Conference organised by NCHRO on 10 December, 2019 at St. John Paul II Complex-Margao. The Human Rights Day Internationally is celebrated on 10th December every year. It marks the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948 at Paris, after the experience of the 2nd World War.

Thus, in order to honour this day, the National Confederation on Human Rights Organisation (NCHRO) – Goa Unit has organised a One Day Conference on the topic “ADVANCING DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN INDIA, the Role of Youth”. The main objective of NCHRO in organising these conferences is to bring different generations together to unite them to fight against all forms of violations which are directly and indirectly affecting the Human Rights (whether natural or constitutional) of individuals in our country.

The whole day program started at 9.30am and ended by 5:00pm. The conference was divided into a series of talks, a couple of street plays and a workshop on various Human Rights issues. After the registration process, all the participants were asked to take the pledge and to read out loud the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, after which all began with the conference wherein Prof. Joan Rebello started with a Welcome Address. The first event of the conference was a Street Play performed by the G. R. Kare Law College students, on the topic “Sexual Assault”(Rape). Then there was a speech by Madam Deepika D’souza, who spoke about UDHR and the history and importance of Human Rights in India, followed by a Video Presentations on the topics “Child Labour” and “Human Rights for Old Age Citizens” by students of Shree Damodar College and Parvatibai Chowgule College respectively.

After a small tea break, the Conference started with a Series of Talks by different eminent individuals who spoke on topics such as Child Rights, Migrants and Trafficking, Gender Justice and on Pollution and Human Rights. All the 4 speakers of the above topics namely, Rohit Prajapati, Roselle Solomon, Arun Pandey and Albertina Almeida gave a brief introduction to their topics and stated that they would conduct a workshop on these topics with the students in the afternoon session. Thus, before the lunch break, the students were asked to divide themselves into groups of 4 for attending the workshops.However, immediately after the lunch break, there was a Street Play by the students from Carmel College for Women on the topic “Atrocities faced by LGBTQs Community,” followed by a Presentation made by the students of Multipurpose College on the topic “Rights of Senior Citizens.” It was then that the respective workshops commenced which went on for almost 2 hours. The workshop was more of an interactive session wherein the students of each group were asked to speak over different Human Rights issues and were shown different videos and short films. Towards the end, the student leaders of each group had to put up a presentation on what they learnt from the workshop and also provide any suggestions which should be incorporated by the citizens of Goa to protect and enforce various Human Rights. Finally, all the students were given Certificates for participating in the One-Day Conference and a Vote of Thanks was given by Fr. Savio Fernandes, Chairperson, NCHRO-Goa Unit.

LABOUR LAW CLUB REPORT 2019-2020

The members of the Labour Law Club for the academic year 2019 –20 recommended conducting sessions on specific Labour Laws, where students would be espoused to practical aspect of the statute. The Club, under the guidance of faculty Co-ordinator Asst. Prof. Shruti Kamat Dalal, conducted two sessions on Employees State Insurance Act (ESI Act). Mr. Narendra Ojha, Dy Director ESI Corporation, Panaji, briefly introduced the object and purpose of the Act with a detailed coverage of the concept of contributions and benefits affecting organized sector.

Mr. Sailesh Chauhan, Technical Staff ESI Corporation, Panaji, dealt with the digital matrix of the Act. He discussed and demonstrated the usage of the online portal of the ESIC. Speedy Enrollment of an employee, availing of the benefits and registration of an establishment was explained and demonstrated.
